Imagine a city where every essential is just a short walk or bike ride away, enhanced by group transportation via autonomous EV buses and trains. In this city, deliveries are efficiently managed with self-driving robots on the ground and drones in the sky.

Essentially, a 15-minute city is a smart city.

It’s not just an architectural concept but a blueprint for a sustainable, vibrant, and community-centric future, powered by humanity’s greatest inventions.

At the heart of this urban renaissance is a blend of accessibility and sustainability, which offers:

  1. Combating Climate Change: 15-minute cities emphasize walking, cycling, and using public transportation instead of using personal cars. This significant reduction in vehicular traffic means fewer carbon emissions, leading to a decrease in urban air pollution and a positive impact on the environment. As a result, these cities play a vital role in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.
  2. Boosting Local Economies: By making local businesses easily accessible to residents, 15-minute cities cultivate a thriving local economy. When people can quickly walk or bike to their nearby grocer, bakery, or cafe, it encourages frequent patronage. This local emphasis not only boosts small businesses but also keeps money within the community, fostering economic growth from within.
  3. Making Housing More Affordable: In 15-minute cities, the efficient use of land, combined with the repurposing of underutilized spaces, increases housing supply. With an expanded housing supply, competition is intensified, naturally driving down housing costs and making homes more affordable to a wider demographic.
  4. Next-Gen Convenience: The compact nature of 15-minute cities makes them ideal for integrating innovative delivery systems. Self-driving food delivery robots can easily navigate the short distances on the ground, while delivery drones efficiently transport goods from above. This fusion of urban design with cutting-edge technology results in unparalleled convenience for city dwellers.
  5. Fostering Tight-Knit Communities: The design of a 15-minute city encourages frequent social interactions. When residents regularly walk or cycle, they naturally engage with their neighbors more often, creating a sense of community. This model transforms urban areas from mere living spaces to thriving, interconnected communities.

Of course, transitioning to this ideal requires some strategic changes. It will be a gradual process. We’d likely have to start one neighborhood at a time by limiting road usage to make the most efficient use of land. By first targeting areas with fewer car owners or by implementing central parking lots, we can ensure a more seamless transition.

At the federal level, Congress can guide the nation toward this vision by allocating funds for urban planning and promoting sustainable policies. By incentivizing city administrations that prioritize the 15-minute city model, we further underscore their crucial role in reshaping urban American life.

This vision for our urban future is one of the reasons I am running for Congress. I believe that with the right policies, support, and dedication, we can redefine what living in a city means while addressing some of the biggest issues of today.
