Dear Trump, America Needs an AI Czar Now
I’m an AI developer and I’m currently working on an AI bill in California. So brace yourself for a touch of AI jargon.
I woke up this morning and came up with a new idea for a prompt on Midjourney.
I typed /imagine billions of taxpayer dollars slipping away each year due to inefficiencies and fraud, funds that could have bolstered essential services or supported those truly in need.
This is what it came up with:
I suppose all the money lying around is accurate enough.
Because in 2021 alone, the Government Accountability Office reported approximately $281 billion in improper payments across federal programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and unemployment insurance.
During the pandemic, over $63 billion was lost to fraudulent unemployment claims — a clear illustration of resources diverted from their intended purpose.
But there’s a solution at our fingertips: appointing an AI czar at DOGE to centralize and lead the nation’s approach to artificial intelligence.
Implementing real-time AI systems capable of detecting fraudulent activities can significantly reduce losses.
We already have a problem with deepfakes, and my best guess is that we’re going to resolve it with AI. The government moves slowly, but it would certainly help if we funded efforts to build AI that can combat misinformation and deepfakes altogether.
In some areas, we’re already doing this and it’s working.
For instance, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services utilized AI through the Fraud Prevention System, saving over $1 billion in its initial years by preventing improper payments.
Scaling AI across all federal programs would not only enhance efficiency but also ensure that resources are allocated appropriately.
California’s Senate Bill 970 (SB 970), which I sponsored, would mandate transparency and accountability in the use of AI-generated synthetic media.
Applying similar principles at the federal level, an AI czar could establish guidelines ensuring that AI applications in government are ethical, transparent, and focused on public benefit.
An AI czar can also help to coordinate national AI policies, streamline bureaucracy to increase convenience, and optimize disaster relief through improved logistics.
Appointing an AI czar is a strategic necessity. This role would provide the coordination and guidance needed to fully leverage AI’s capabilities, ensuring that development and implementation align with ethical standards and serve the best interests of all citizens.
By taking decisive action now, we position the United States to navigate the challenges and opportunities that AI presents. It’s time to embrace a unified approach that harnesses technology to enhance the quality of life for everyone.
If not, we’re in for a rude awakening.
